art winners
Two New Hanover County elementary students were honored at the 2011 Young Artists Competition sponsored by Professional Educators of North Carolina (PENC). Ogden Elementary fourth grade student Sydney Spivey was one of seven winners in the competition. Sydney was in third grade at Wrightsboro Elementary School when she created the winning artwork. Keely Rios Sanchez, currently a fifth grade student at Wrightsboro Elementary, received an Honorable Mention for her creative art entry.
Syndey and Wrightsboro Elementary Art Teacher, Bronwen Guthrie, were recognized at an award ceremony at the Renaissance North Hills Hotel in Raleigh recently. Sydney was awarded a certificate of achievement and a cash prize of $50. Ms. Guthrie received a certificate for her support of the competition. Sydney’s work will appear in upcoming PENC publications.
Each year, PENC selects winning entries from elementary, middle, and high school submissions. The goal of this competition is to highlight the hard work of North Carolina’s visual art teachers and their students. PENC is a state-based, nonpartisan professional organization that has been serving educators for over thirty years. More information about PENC can be found at www.pencweb.org
