testing teens
Taking the SATs can cause teens a lot of stress. Here are 10 tips from the American School Counselors Association to help prepare students for this important test.
- Gather Materials- The night before the test make sure to have all materials that will be needed on test day including admission ticket, photo ID, #2 pencils, a calculator and a healthy snack.
- Don't Cram- The best thing to do the night before the SAT is to get a good night's rest. Don't stay up late trying to cram more information into your brain.
- Dress in Layers- The climate in the test center could be cold or hot. If you are dressed in layers, you can adjust your clothing when you get settled into the testing room. You will be able to perform better if you are comfortable.
- Locate the Test Center- Make sure to check out the location of the test center before the big day. On the big day, leave early so you can arrive early.
- Don't Fret Over One Question- Make sure to not spend too much time on one question. Each question is worth the same number of points so it is not worth your time to stress over one. Move on and go back to it if you have time.
- Don't Look for Unscored Questions- The experimental section of the SAT is well camouflaged so do your best on every question.
- Pay Attention to Where You Are in a Section- On the SAT, obvious answer choices early in a section may be correct but obvious choices near the end of a set are often booby traps.
- Eliminate and Guess - If you don't know an answer, don't leave the answer blank. It is better to eliminate answer choices that you know are wrong and then take your best guess from the remaining answer choices.
- Watch Those Bubbles- Make sure the answer you are bubbling in on the answer sheet matches the number of question you are answering. Misalignment can ruin your test score.
- Relax- Your attitude and frame of mind on testing day is critical to your performance. Be confident in yourself and your abilities.
