Measurement is an important skill for children to master and one of the more difficult concepts is capacity. When children help in the kitchen, they have the opportunity to learn many units of capacity by measuring ingredients.
Kuhn Rikon Switzerland has a line of children’s kitchen tools called Kinderkitchen. Tools that will encourage measuring in the kitchen are the Mouse Measuring Cups and Gold Fish Measuring Spoons.
The Mouse Measuring Cups include 4 colorful mice that measure ¼, 1/3, ½ and 1 cup. The set also comes with a spatula for leveling ingredients that also functions as a clip to hold all the cups together when stacked. Each cup has a flat bottom so that it can stand on its own even when it is full.
The Gold Fish Measuring Spoons are a set of 4 fun fish-shaped spoons that measure 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, ½ teaspoon and ¼ teaspoon. These spoons come on a handy silicone “fishing line” to keep them organized.
I have used these cute tools with my 3 year old daughter who loves to have her own utensils in the kitchen. They bring the fun to functional!
