The NC End of Grade tests are only a few weeks away and many parents wonder how they can help their children prepare for these cumulative assessments.
Many questions on the math portion of the test are multi-step problems so it may be beneficial to review with students how to work through these. Math word problems for your child's grade level can be found throughout the math text book and also online. It may be helpful to choose and work through one problem a day between now and the time of the test.
Use these steps when working through a multi-step problem:
- Read the problem.
- Determine what the question is and what operation(s) you could use to solve it.
- Highlight all the numbers in the problem and determine if they are all necessary to solve the problem. Many times additional information is given that is unnecessary to solve the problem.
- Break the problem down..."First, I need to solve this part. Then, with the answer to the first step I can solve the second part". Make sure that your child knows that there is more to be done after solving the first part and not to simply stop working the problem after step 1. Multiple choice tests will often offer the first part of the solution as the final answer.
- When a final answer has been determined, revisit the original question and make sure that the answer is reasonable and makes sense.
