For two years Wilmington Health’s Family Fit Challenge has contributed to smaller waist lines and lowered BMIs. This family plan offers eight weekly presentations relating to childhood obesity and incorporates interactive exercises and games for an informative, fun experience. Founder J’nelle Ruscetti, PA-C, recently shared data illustrating the program’s success.
Fourth grade students at Sunset Park Elementary and Carolina Beach Elementary, recently participated in the Student Fitness Challenge, which uses the same concepts as the Family Fit Challenge. The students were measured before and after, and the results were astounding. Sixty-seven percent of the children had a reduction in BMI. Eighty-eight percent of children in the overweight category and 78% of children in the obese category saw a BMI reduction.
“Using a statistical model called the Modified Wald Method, this data reveals a 99% confidence that the program had an impact on the change in BMI in the students who went through the fitness challenge,” said J’nelle. “Because obesity is a prevailing issue, I am pleased to share this exciting data and hope to expand my mission to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic starting with our community.”
In January, J’nelle plans to start a Student Fitness Challenge with the second grade students at Sunset Park Elementary and Carolina Beach Elementary. Family sessions are available for Wilmington families who wish to partake in the Family Fit Challenge in 2014. The first session will begin January 9 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, and the next session will start on February 4 at the Wilmington Health Northchase office.
