Cold and flu season is in full swing, but there are several ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Here are some tips to keep you healthy this season:
- Get the flu vaccine. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that everyone get the yearly flu vaccine. Even though there are many stands of the flu virus, the vaccine protects against the three viruses suggested by researchers to be the most common.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Try to avoid close contact with people that are sick.
- Protect others by covering your mouth with your arm when you sneeze or cough and throw away tissues right after using them.
- Avoid touching your mouth, eyes and nose as much as possible since these are pathways for the spread of germs.
- If you feel you have the flu or another illness that is causing fever, contact your doctor.
