Child Eating
According to a recent Consumer Reports study, the tuna fish sandwiches that so many of our children eat for lunch every day may be putting them at risk for ingesting dangerously high levels of mercury. Overexposure to this toxin can lead to both brain and nervous system damage, and unfortunately, mercury levels are currently on the rise in almost all of the seafood that we commonly eat. As for our children, the biggest danger comes from canned tuna, a staple in many brown-bag lunches, school cafeterias and salad bars. Knowing the type and source of tuna that our children eat, monitoring their weekly tuna intake, and switching out their tuna for other types of lower-mercury fish, (such as canned salmon,) are some of the ways that we can help ensure the safety of the fish in our kids’ diets.
