Thanksgiving
The holidays are upon us and family festivities are underway. During the holidays, there are many opportunities to sit down with large groups of family and friends to enjoy a delicious meal. During these occasions, certain topics of conversation should be avoided so that everyone has an enjoyable time. The following are a few topics suggested by thedailymeal.com to avoid during holiday meals.
- Politics- There is a time and place for discussions on politics but a holiday meal is not it. Due to the heated nature of most political debates, these conversations should be avoided.
- Money- Everyone is aware that the holidays can be quite costly. However, it is not appropriate to talk about how much money you are spending or your financial situation in mixed company.
- Family Scandals- Family get-togethers should be a time to put aside differences and not bring up past scandals or drama. Focus on positive stories about relatives.
- Nutrition- Holiday meals are a time to enjoy yourself and not think so much about how many calories you are consuming. It only makes people feel bad when you talk about how fattening or how full of cholesterol something is.
- Criticisms of Food- Someone has spent a lot of time and effort preparing the meal and the last thing that they want to hear is someone criticize it. Avoid making negative comments about the food no matter how dry the turkey is. Focus on what is good and compliment the chef.
- Life Choices of Guests- Some people choose to remain single because they are focused on their career. Some choose to not have children. Others haven't decided what they are going to do with their lives. Regardless of what guests are doing with their lives, stay away from topics that may offend someone's life choices.
