On Saturday, May 31, the Girl Scouts of New Hanover County will celebrate National Olympic Day at Empie Park in Wilmington from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. “We’re expecting about 100 girls, but are open to any child, girl or boy, who shows up and pays the $5.00 entrance fee,” says Debbie Todd, New Hanover County Membership Director. “It would be a great time for girls interested in joining a troop next school year to check things out.”
Events will include track and field sports, such as sprints and a relay race, as well as golf, basketball, a javelin throw, jousting, long jump, and more. Clinics in tennis and soccer are also on the schedule with some additional sports possible.
Olympic Day was created by the USOC in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894. The goal of Olympic Day is to promote the Olympic values and participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability. In 2013, more than 200,000 Americans participated in 8,323 events hosted in 690 cities across all 50 states. Americans also celebrated in ten overseas locations making last year the most successful Olympic Day ever.
