New Exhibit at NC Maritime Museum in Southport
SOUTHPORT – The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport officially opened to the public in its new location at Fort Johnston on July 4.
Massive renovations have transformed the former soldiers’ barracks at the Fort into one facility, housing the Museum’s exhibit hall, classroom, library and store.
“Through a tremendous outpouring of support from the town of Southport and the public, we’re now able to begin a great, new chapter for the Maritime Museum at Southport,” said Joseph Schwarzer, Director of the North Carolina Maritime Museums. “New exhibits display the intriguing history of the region, and the impact it made on the state and Eastern seaboard.”
In January, the Museum closed to begin packing and cataloging artifacts for the move. The Museum first opened in 1992 just a few blocks away from the new location.
Exhibits offer information and hands-on learning about Native Americans, European settlers of the Lower Cape Fear region, pirates, boating, hurricanes and marine weather.
Visitors can stand in a pilot house or next to life-sized pirates for fun photo ops.
The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport is located at 204 E. Moore St. The Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
