Dorothy Meets Alice
Brunswick Little Theatre, the first and only non-profit community theatre in Brunswick County, is celebrating its 30th Anniversary, thirty years of doing affordable theatre in Brunswick County. The organization has always included young people in its productions, when appropriate, in shows like Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, Godspell, Oklahoma, and The Wizard of Oz.
Ten years ago, Debbie Skillman saw a need for theatre by children, a program where she could teach children how to do a show and then do productions of their own. She created Stagestruck Players for children and youth 8-18, the Brunswick Little Theatre's youth division, doing at least one show by children each year.
Continuing in its commitment to the children of Brunswick County, Brunswick Little Theatre's Board of Directors gave Jen Iapalucci the green light to head up a new children's workshop called LET'S PLAY for children 4-12, which will hold its first session for twenty children February 10.
In July and August of this year, the troupe will produce its first Disney spectacular for children, Beauty and the Beast. This will be Brunswick Little Theatre's most elaborate and most expensive production to date, but the troupe felt the need to produce the best family friendly production ever for its children for its thirtieth season.
Such commitment to theatre for and by children takes a great deal of commitment by Brunswick Little Theatre's Board of Directors and its members, as well as a great deal of funding. To attain their goals for the children of the county, Brunswick Little Theatre will hold a fund raiser called March Madness.
The gala event will be held at the St. James Community Center on Tuesday, March 19 from 6-10 pm. Participate in the basketball hoops challenge, dine on tailgating fare catered by Rhonda Uhlmann of The Flying Fish Cafe, dance to the music of The Brunswick Big Band, support the organization with silent and live auction items. Tickets are on sale now for $50 per person and may be purchased at The Grape & Ale, Howe Outrageous in Southport, and other volunteers throughout the community. If you would like to purchase a table, make a donation, or provide auction items, please contact Candace Hobbs at 910-515-8312.
