Consumers typically join warehouse clubs to save money on groceries and other household items. Members of Costco may not know that the price of an item tells a story. It can indicate which items are marked down, specially priced, rebate items, discontinued, or will be not be restocked. On Hub Pages, writer Len Rapoport, reveals what price tags reveal at Costco. Here are some of the numbers and symbols to pay attention to:
- Prices that end in 99¢ are regular priced items.
- Prices that end in 97¢ have been marked down from the regular price
- Odd pricing, such as 79¢, 49¢, or 89¢ indicate specially priced items that Costco got a deal from the manufacturer.
- An asterisk* on the upper right side of the sign means the item has been discontinued so if you like it, you may want to stock up.
- 88¢ or .00 endings indicate manager markdowns. Sometimes the company uses these to move a product very fast.
