TrySports offers some ideas and local resources for family fitness.
Participate in a local 5k
5k events can be that stepping stone for families to get kick-started into healthier lives. How do you ask? Take a look:
- Training plans are abundant and available for all levels and ages. For example, TrySports offers a Walk2Run Training Program for beginners to get going and have a structured plan to achieve the goal of finishing a 5k.
- Kids now have the option of participating with local youth development programs such as Without Limits Youth Programs, Girls on the Run, or STRIDE.
- The variety of 5k events these days are amazing! Color runs, glow runs, charity based runs, costume runs--really something the whole family can enjoy.
Group Classes
- Gyms offer plenty of classes at all levels and for all purposes. These classes not only provide accountability, but also the fun and engaging aspect of working out in a group setting. Some of TrySports' Strategic Partners offer structured group workouts:
- TOPS Athletics: If you want some of the best in town look no further than Mike Barnhart, Jeff Smith, and Mike Taranto of TOPS. These accredited and certified trainers offer high energy circuit training group classes and also one-on-one personal training sessions.
- Crossfit Wilmington: Check out their offerings at their website, but this may sum it up: “We welcome new members of all ages and fitness levels. Our workouts are tailored to fit any individual's limitations or capabilities.”
At our store we offer a variety of free workouts for our local community. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come out and try any of our workouts. Check out these offerings and our calendar for further info:
- Tuesday--Open water swimming
- Wednesday--Group ride or group run
- Friday--Core at the Store
- Saturday--Group run
- Sunday--Group ride
Go off the beaten path
Sometimes families need activities not overly structured, but still fitness oriented. We suggest:
- Paddleboarding. All ages can do this and it's super fun! This is a great way to experience the outdoors and explore our natural surroundings here on the coast. Go see our friends at Carolina Paddle Board Company for classes, tours, and rentals.
- Form a family team for a Mud Run. Mud Runs are a combination of running, walking, climbing, crawling, and completing obstacles. As a family team you must help one another complete each leg of the event--and get really muddy doing it!
