Spring Flower Craft
Now that the weather is getting warmer, break out some colorful craft materials and get creative with your kids. This craft uses lots of repurposed materials and brings out big smiles in both kids and parents. These flowers would make great Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gifts!
What you’ll need:
- Empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls
- White glue
- Small, disposable container or cup, like an applesauce cup
- Egg cartons
- Tissue paper or colored paper napkins (we used green for the stems and a variety of colors for the flowers)
- Wooden craft sticks
- Paintbrush
- Scissors or sharp knife (Parents only!)
What you’ll do:
- Ahead of time, cut colored tissue paper into 4-inch squares. Cut green tissue paper into 2-inch squares. Cut apart the egg cartons into individual “cups,” and squeeze some glue into the small cup/container.
- Give your child a toilet paper/paper towel tube, a paintbrush, and the cup of glue.
- Help your child paint glue onto the cardboard tube, then stick on squares of tissue paper. Feel free to add more glue over the tissue paper to make sure they are stuck on securely. (This will be the flower’s stem/bouquet holder).
- To make the flowers, have your child squeeze some glue into one of the egg carton cups. Lay a square piece of tissue paper over the cup and have your child poke the center of the tissue paper down into the glue in the cup.
- Squeeze more glue onto the center of that piece of tissue paper in the cup. Add another piece of tissue paper on top of it.
- To create the center of the flower, your child can crumple a piece of tissue paper into a ball and glue it in the center of the flower.
- Add a craft stick by cutting a hole in the bottom of the egg carton cup with scissors or a small knife and poking the craft stick through. Create a bouquet by resting the flowers down into the cardboard tube stem.
Tips for Parents:
- Younger kids may be fascinated by the tissue paper squares. Give them a few bowls full of the squares and let them mix and sort them.
- When you begin gluing, separate out some of the tissue paper squares and put them in front of younger kids one by one. Otherwise, a younger child may be tempted to glue on a whole handful of tissue paper at once. And if they do, that’s ok too!
- Kids may want to crumple tissue paper and glue it inside the egg carton cups to make the flowers. Let them make their own creations and try not to interfere with their method.
- Provide glue in smaller bottles and let kids squeeze out as much as they want. It will dry, and they will learn how to control it better if you give them free access to squeeze it all out. Running out of glue on the first flower will teach them a valuable lesson too.
- Resist the urge to fix your child’s work. Isn’t it much more valuable to have a work of art that represents your child’s personality and developmental abilities at his or her age than have a work of art that you created? Which one will make you look back and smile when you see it a year from now?
